South West Apprenticeship Awards 2013 Finals

The South West Apprenticeship Awards 2013, taking place at the Holiday Inn, Taunton were an overwhelming success. Although we did not win the award in our category of ‘Small Employer of the Year 2013’ we were given the highly commended award and we did exceptionally well to reach the finals, there were over 1600 applications in the region of which 12 employers were chosen to compete for the 5 employer awards. There were also 11 apprentices chosen competing for 4 individual apprenticeship awards. The nominated few were chosen by a team of local judges who all had an active role within the apprenticeship programs around the region.

The evening started with refreshments and photograph opportunities before we headed to the reception room where the awards would take place.. We were joined on our table by Carys Evans, James Tuckett and Chris Brossard of Huish Business School who had nominated us for the award of Somerset micro employer of the year 2013, which we won and led to us entering the south west competition. We enjoyed a meal and then it was down to business… the award ceremony began.

There was not long to wait for us as our category was up first. Each nominated company had a bio read out and then much like the Oscars, the golden envelope was opened slowly to reveal the winner, unfortunately for us our name was not on the card, instead the award went to Daniel K Neaves Hair Ltd, who thoroughly deserved the award, having 5 apprentices who he supported through training and out of work educational activities. Although it was disappointing not to be a winner, everyone at the event had already won by just reaching these finals. We received a wonderful glass trophy and also had many pictures taken by the professional photographer, whilst we were going through this the rest for the crowd were entertained by a local entertainer. This process was then completed for the four further awards listed below.

Medium Employer of the year- Blue Flame Ltd (Winner) and Algram Group Ltd
Large Employer of the year- Plymouth City Council (Winner), AugustaWestland and Quest Global Engineering Ltd
Macro Employer of the year- North Bristol NHS Trust (Winner), Serco Ltd and Airbus Operations Ltd
Newcomer Employer of the Year- Brunelcare (Winner) and Premier Employer solutions

After the Employers awards it was the apprentices time to Shine, much like the employers a small biography was read out and then the winners were revealed, Although we weren’t directly involved with this part of the ceremony, it was great to hear of the stories of the nominated apprentices and was great recognition of there success. Those who didn’t win also received a trophy as highly commended apprentices. The nominations were as follows:

Intermediate Apprentice of the Year- Lydia Webster (Winner) and Ben Tarrant.
Advance Apprentice of the Year- Peter Williams (Winner), Jessica Doherty and Benjamin Ballad
Higher Apprentice of the Year- Donna Yarwood (Winner), Abigail Chedzoy and Hal Willis
The Apprentice Champion of the Year- Matthew Dennison (Winner), James Wyatt and Lawrence Wride

It was a great honour to be part of such a great evening and we wish all the winners every success at the national awards. We look forward to continuing our great relationship with Huish Business School and will continue to support our current apprentice William Bradshaw as well as looking to employ and support a further apprentice within the near future.
